Historiography Documentation for the Krauss Coat of Arms can be found in the Rietstap Armrorial General. Heraldic artists of old using a unique language described the Coat of Arms. Above the shield is the Crest. A Motto was not recorded with this Krauss Coat of Arms. The surname Krauss appears to be characteristic in origin, and is believed to be associated with the meaning in German :" one who has curly or wavy hair." The family name comes from Mittelhochdeutsch (the medieval German) 'Kruse' which means 'ehernes gefäß' (iron vessel). Two possible origins of Kraus or Krauss. The first is a knight from Prussia called 'Kraus von Krausenfels' and the second is a bishop from 14th century somewhere in south Germany or Austria. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations of Krauss to be Kraus, Krause, Kruse, Kruss, Krauses and Krausses. German
spelling Krauß. |
